Full Frame vs Insert Window Replacement: Cost, Process, and When to Use Each
What Is Insert (Pocket) Replacement
Insert replacement, also called pocket replacement or retrofit installation, keeps the existing window frame, exterior trim (brick mold), and interior casing in place. The installer removes the old sashes, hardware, and parting stops, then slides a complete new window unit into the existing frame opening. The new window is shimmed, leveled, screwed into the existing frame, and sealed with insulating foam and caulk.
This method is faster (typically 30 to 60 minutes per window), less disruptive (no interior or exterior trim damage), and significantly cheaper than full frame replacement. Most replacement window manufacturers build specific insert models designed for this application, with installation fins or clips that attach to the existing frame.

What Happens to the Glass Area
One important tradeoff with insert replacement is that you lose some visible glass area. Because the new window sits inside the existing frame, the new frame's thickness reduces the glass opening by approximately 3/4 inch to 1.5 inches on each side. On a standard 30x48 inch window, this means about 10% to 15% less glass area compared to the original window or compared to a full frame replacement where the new window fills the entire rough opening.
For most homeowners, this reduction is barely noticeable and does not meaningfully affect light or aesthetics. But in homes with small windows where every inch of glass matters, or in rooms where the current windows already feel undersized, the glass area loss is worth considering.
What Is Full Frame Replacement
Full frame replacement (also called new construction installation) removes the entire existing window, including the frame, exterior brick mold or trim, and interior casing, down to the bare rough opening in the wall framing. The contractor then installs a complete new window unit with integral nailing fins or mounting flanges that attach directly to the wall studs, followed by new exterior trim, flashing, and interior casing.
This method provides the largest possible glass area because the new window fills the full rough opening without the layer of the old frame in between. It also allows the installer to inspect the rough opening for water damage, rot, or insulation gaps, and address any issues before the new window goes in.

Full frame costs $200 to $600 more per window than insert replacement. On a 15-window project, that premium adds $3,000 to $9,000 to the total. The difference comes from the additional labor time (90 to 150 minutes per window), the new trim materials, and the interior and exterior finish work.
When Insert Replacement Is the Right Choice
Insert replacement is appropriate when all of the following conditions are true:
The existing frame is structurally sound. Inspect the frame by pressing a screwdriver or awl into the wood at multiple points, especially at the sill and the lower corners where water collects. If the wood is solid and resists the probe, the frame is adequate. If the screwdriver sinks in easily, the wood is rotted and the frame needs replacement.
The frame is level, plumb, and square. Measure diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. If the measurements are within 1/4 inch of each other, the frame is square enough for an insert window. If the difference exceeds 1/4 inch, the frame is out of square and an insert window will not seal properly without excessive shimming.
You are not changing the window size or type. Insert replacement works for like-for-like swaps (replacing a double-hung with a double-hung of the same size, for example). If you want to enlarge a window, combine two openings into one, or convert a window to a door, you need full frame work.
There is no evidence of water damage around the window. Check the interior drywall or plaster below the window for stains, bubbling paint, or soft spots. Check the exterior siding around the window for discoloration or gaps. If you see signs of water intrusion, you should open up the wall during replacement to find and fix the source, which means full frame installation.
When Full Frame Replacement Is Necessary
Full frame is the only option when the existing frame is compromised, but it is also the better choice in several other situations:
Rotted or damaged frames. This is the most common reason for full frame replacement. Wood frames in homes older than 30 years frequently show rot at the sill, lower jambs, and corners. Once rot has penetrated the frame, inserting a new window into a failing frame is a waste of money because the rot will continue to spread and eventually compromise the new window's seal and support.
Changing window sizes. If you want to enlarge a bathroom window, add an egress window to a basement bedroom, or resize an opening for a bay or bow window, the rough opening must be modified. This automatically requires full frame work, including new header sizing calculations, new jack studs, and potentially a structural engineering review if you are widening the opening in a load-bearing wall.
Evidence of past water intrusion. If staining, mold, or soft sheathing is visible around the window frame, opening up the wall to assess and repair the damage is essential. Covering it up with an insert window means the moisture problem continues hidden behind the wall, leading to mold growth, structural damage, and eventually a much more expensive repair.
Original installation was poorly done. Some homes, particularly those built during boom periods (late 1990s, mid 2000s), have windows that were installed without proper flashing or with inadequate insulation around the frame. Full frame replacement gives the installer a chance to do it right with modern flashing tape, spray foam insulation, and drainage plane integration.
Exterior renovation is happening simultaneously. If you are replacing siding, re-siding, or doing stucco work, it makes sense to do full frame window replacement at the same time because the exterior trim is already being disturbed. The marginal cost of full frame versus insert is much smaller when the exterior is already open.
Quality Differences in the Finished Result
When done correctly, both methods produce a well-sealed, properly insulated, and attractive window installation. The visible difference is subtle: insert windows sit slightly recessed within the existing frame, creating a somewhat deeper reveal (the depth between the glass and the interior wall surface). Full frame windows sit flush with the wall plane, matching the look of new construction.
Thermally, full frame replacement has a slight edge because the installer can ensure continuous insulation around the entire rough opening, which is not possible with insert installation where the existing frame remains. This matters most in cold climates where thermal bridging through the old frame can create cold spots and condensation. In moderate climates, the thermal difference between the two methods is negligible.
For air sealing, both methods can achieve excellent results when the installer uses spray foam insulation (low-expanding, window-rated foam) around the frame. The critical step is not the installation method itself but whether the installer takes the time to foam and caulk every gap. Sloppy air sealing negates the energy benefits of an expensive window regardless of how it was installed.
Mixed Approach: Combining Both Methods
Many whole-house projects use a mixed approach, insert replacement for windows with good frames and full frame for the ones with damage. This is the most cost-effective strategy because it avoids the unnecessary expense of full frame work on sound openings while still addressing the problem windows properly.
Ask your contractor to inspect every frame and give you a per-window recommendation. A reputable installer will not push full frame on every opening because they know it adds time and complexity to the job. Conversely, a contractor who insists on insert-only when some frames are clearly rotted is cutting corners.
Insert replacement is the right choice for 60% to 70% of replacement projects where the existing frames are solid and the opening dimensions stay the same. Full frame is necessary when frames are damaged, you are changing sizes, or the original installation had flashing or insulation defects. A mixed approach that uses the appropriate method per opening delivers the best results for the lowest total cost.
